In 1897, Saint Patrick in Norwich opened a mission church in the section known as Norwichtown. The mission church was named in honor of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It was dedicated a year later and served by Saint Patrick for four years. In 1902, growth of the mission church justified it’s establishment as a full parish with a resident pastor. Father Christopher McCann was the first resident pastor and served at the parish for 11 years. He was followed by father Charles Brennan, who had to deal with a serious fire in the church on Easter Sunday 1923.
